Are Humpback Whales Endangered
Whale Education Information, Australia Whale Experience
Humpback whales are one of the most iconic and beloved species of whale, with a distinctive shape and beautiful songs. However, their population has been threatened by a number of human activities, leading to their endangerment status.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the humpback whale as an endangered species, meaning that their population is at risk of extinction. The population of humpback whales has decreased by roughly 90% over the past century, due to a number of factors.
The primary cause of their endangerment is commercial whaling, which has been responsible for the death of an estimated 300,000 humpback whales over the last 200 years. This is due to the fact that humpback whales are a highly sought after species for their blubber, which is used in a number of products. Additionally, humpback whales are also highly susceptible to getting caught in fishing nets, which can lead to their death or injury.
Habitat degradation and climate change are two additional threats to the population of humpback whales. As the ocean warms, food sources for humpback whales are becoming more scarce, which can lead to starvation. Additionally, habitat degradation can make it more difficult for humpback whales to find shelter and feed, leading to further declines in their population.
Fortunately, there are a number of conservation efforts in place to help protect humpback whales and their habitats. The most successful of these initiatives is the International Whaling Commission, which has taken action to reduce the number of humpback whales killed by commercial whaling. Additionally, there are a number of organisations that are working to protect the habitats of humpback whales, such as the World Wildlife Fund.
In conclusion, humpback whales are an endangered species, due to a number of human activities such as commercial whaling, habitat degradation and climate change. Fortunately, there are a number of conservation efforts in place to help protect humpback whales, and their population is slowly beginning to recover.
BEST DAY EVER!
We stayed in Bundaberg so we could do the Lady Musgrave Experience, and it did not disappoint! The whole day was fantastic! The crew were so friendly and knowledgable. The boat was new, in great condition and was very comfortable.
AWESOME!
We had a great day out. Crew were lovely food delicious. They split the day so you are doing a walk on the island. Ride the glass bottom boat and can snorkel for a couple of hours.
OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE!
What an amazing day out, I had no idea I would be so close to the whales. A few of the whales were so close you could look right into their eyes. It was one of the best days of my life!
