Humpback Whale Facts
Whale Education Information, Australia Whale Experience
Humpback whales are some of the most majestic creatures in the ocean. They are a large species of baleen whale, with males growing up to 52 feet in length and females growing up to 59 feet in length. These whales are found in all the major oceans, but some of their smaller species can be found in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Here are some interesting facts about these magnificent creatures:
1. Humpback whales are known for their beautiful singing and have the most complex songs of any marine mammal. They sing for hours and the sound can travel for miles. Scientists believe that these songs may be used to attract mates and communicate with other whales.
2. Humpback whales are acrobatic animals and are known for their spectacular leaps and dives. They can reach heights of up to 15 feet and can stay underwater for 15 minutes at a time.
3. Humpback whales have a unique type of feeding strategy called bubble-net feeding. They will swim in circles and blow bubbles to herd their prey into a tight group. Then they will swim quickly through the middle of the group and open their mouths to feed.
4. Humpback whales have large pectoral fins which can reach up to 16 feet in length. They use these to maneuver in the water and to make sudden turns.
5. Humpback whales typically live in small family groups. The group consists of a female and her calf, along with other females and calves.
6. Humpback whale calves are born with a thick layer of blubber, which helps them stay warm in the cold ocean waters.
7. Humpback whales migrate thousands of miles each year in search of food. During their migration, they will often travel in groups.
8. Humpback whales have a lifespan of up to 50 years.
9. Humpback whales are an endangered species and their population has declined in recent years due to hunting and climate change.
10. Humpback whales are intelligent animals and have been known to interact with humans. They are curious and will often approach boats and divers.
Humpback whales are some of the most incredible animals in the ocean.
BEST DAY EVER!
We stayed in Bundaberg so we could do the Lady Musgrave Experience, and it did not disappoint! The whole day was fantastic! The crew were so friendly and knowledgable. The boat was new, in great condition and was very comfortable.
AWESOME!
We had a great day out. Crew were lovely food delicious. They split the day so you are doing a walk on the island. Ride the glass bottom boat and can snorkel for a couple of hours.
OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE!
What an amazing day out, I had no idea I would be so close to the whales. A few of the whales were so close you could look right into their eyes. It was one of the best days of my life!
