Hervey Bay and Bundaberg both offer excellent humpback whale watching in Queensland. Hervey Bay sits inside Platypus Bay behind Fraser Island (K’gari) and is the only Queensland location with permitted swim-with-whales operators. Bundaberg departs into Southern Great Barrier Reef waters, carries far fewer vessels per whale, and pairs a whale day with reef and island trips.

Choose Hervey Bay if…
Getting in the water with a whale is the thing you want most, or you are combining the trip with K’gari. The permitted swim-with programs operate there and nowhere else in Queensland — see the rules on swimming with whales.
Choose Bundaberg if…
You would rather share a whale with one boat than six, and you want the reef in the same trip. Encounters in Southern Great Barrier Reef water tend to run long, because resting mothers and calves are in no hurry and there is nothing pushing them along. The reef guide explains why they stop here.
What both have in common
The same east Australian humpback population passes both, under the same approach rules and the same protections. Neither location can guarantee sightings, and any operator claiming otherwise is overselling. Our position is set out plainly in the FAQ.
